This damned pencil. You would think that after all these years and all these computers, my ‘process’ would be ever so much more efficient than when I got this thing from my insurance agent thirty years ago. (What kind of insurance agent gives out a mechanical pencil as an ad spec?) But you’d be wrong. In fact, the more machines I get, the longer this shit takes.
And that’s actually the point. After all these years of professional music-making I cannot honestly say that music production is easier or more ‘efficient’. Oh sure, one can create more complicated things. But more than anything, the machines simply encourage one to do more. It’s like those low-cal snacks; you end up eating twelve of them and taking in even more calories than if you’d followed Julia’s advice and had the one with the butter.
But there’s a limit, right? No matter how fast you twiddle the knobs (or twiddle yer fingers) you can only do so much. Your ears can only appreciate so many layers; so many notes. So at some point, maybe it’s time to take a breath and ask, “Why?” Do I really need “more”? Am I driving the bus or is the bus driving me?
